Enoshima

On the other edge of Kamakura far away from the hundreds of temples, to Jordan's delight, is Enoshima Island. I actually think it's more of a peninsula with the giant double bridge for cars and another one for pedestrians. This island is extremely popular among locals and tourists. As you enter the island you walk up a crowded street filled with shops and food until you get to a giant red torri. This is the view looking back toward Kamakura.

There are several paths along the island that go up and down thousands of steps past temples, parks, gardens, a lighthouse with an observation deck, and tide pools and sea caves in the back. Similar to Taya Caverns, these caves also had stone carvings in them, and a dragon! Legend has it that a terrible dragon who would terrorize the country side used to live in the cave. One day he asked a beautiful lady to marry him and she said she would not until he stopped doing evil deeds. The dragon cleaned up his act and they got married. In the back of one of the caves you can make a wish, bang the drum two times, and if the dragon flashes a light twice it means your wish will come true!
